The Indramat MKD071B-061-GP0-KN servo motor is the most popular motor Indramat ever made. Indramat made a lot of motors. Why is this one so popular?
The entire MKD series of servo motors is impressive and versatile. These are synchronous three phase permanent magnet motors, which tells you that they have a very long service life. They require no maintenance (more on that later). The 71B part of the MKD071B-061-GP0-KN name refers to the frame size. The B tells us that this is the longer of the two 071 sizes. Since the MKD range includes 025 to 112 frame sizes, we can see that this is a middle of the range size.
061 signifies the windings code. This number can be 024 or 035, and the 061 code is the largest available.
The next group of numbers tells us about the options:
- G signifies resolver feedback without a multiturn absolute encoder integrated.
- P tells us that the shaft has a keyway.
- 0 lets us know that there is no holding brake.
K gives the output direction, and K is the only possibility here. N shows that this motor has the standard housing design.
The MKD motors have a lot of possible combinations of options. Knowing exactly which features a particular MKD servo has ensures that we provide exactly the right replacement unit.
This information is so important that it’s available in a number of different places. First, you’ll find it on the metal nameplate on the housing, which you can see in the photo above. There is usually also a peel-off label that you can put onto the servo if the nameplate is hidden when the servo is in place.
The code is also programmed into the unit.
While these motors are maintenance-free, that mostly means that they are completely closed. That makes them a great choice for harsh environments. It also means that you can’t get inside to lubricate the bearings. The bearings are already lubricated for the life of the motor. However, this motor sometimes keeps going much longer than its expected service life.
That means that there will come a time when you need the bearings replaced. If your MKD071B-061-GP0-KN has been at work for more than a decade, it’s time. Factory reman will get your servo back to you with all the wearing parts replaced and a new warranty.
