It would be great if batteries lasted forever. You would never have to worry about your flashlight going out, or your car dying in the middle of nowhere. No longer would you have to watch TV nervously, sitting in constant fear that this might be the moment that the batteries in your remote stop working. And more seriously, you wouldn’t have to remember to change the battery on your SOT.
Nothing is certain, except death and taxes
Batteries aren’t designed to last forever; your batteries are going to die. We just don’t have the technology to create a permanent battery. Battery life is getting longer and longer, and many devices can go years without needing a replacement. Sooner or later however, you’re going to have to change it.
The battery in your station operator terminal (SOT) is no different. You must occasionally change the batteries on your SOT.
Your Indramat SOT has a 3.6V Lithium battery that prevents information loss when the system is powered down. Make sure that the battery in the station operation terminal is never depleted.
How do you know when it’s time to change the battery on your SOT?
Is it a guessing game, like with your garage door opener, where you only know when the battery is dead once you push the button and nothing happens?
Not quite.
Indramat systems are bit more sophisticated than your garage door opener. Software checks the voltage level of your battery at power up and every hour after start up.
If your battery voltage gets too low, a diagnostics message pop ups on the display. Once the first diagnostic window appears, you only have a couple of weeks to change your battery. This is why it’s critical that you change the battery as soon as you notice the diagnostic message.
Changing the battery on your SOT
First, have a replacement battery ready. Then, unscrew the cover plate located on the back of your SOT. Now, you have to disconnect the old battery and immediately connect the new battery.
It’s very important to swap the battery as quickly as possible. Imagine you’re Indiana Jones, and you’re swapping an idol for a bag of rocks. After that, line up the new battery and place it in the socket, and you’re good to go!
If the battery charge gets too low, or if you wait too long while switching the old and the new battery, all of the data in the RAM will be lost. This is not good. If you don’t think you’re up to challenge to replace your batteries you can always call in some professional help!
